How to protect your home and garden from frost?

One of the most common weather conditions that leads to problems in the home and garden is frost, and our country is one of the regions that is exposed to this condition every winter, which leads to damage to many crops, in addition to damage to clocks, water lines, and water pumps.

How does frost happen?

Usually, the cause of frost is a drop in the temperature of the Earth’s surface to zero degrees Celsius or below, as the cold air remains on the Earth’s surface because it is heavier than the hot air, while the hot air rises to the top. This is due to several reasons, either a very cold air mass or A significant decrease in humidity or rapid cooling of the Earth's surface at night due to the absence of clouds.

Protection of water meters, pipes and water pumps:

The best way to protect the water meter and pipes is to apply insulating material to the pipes and wrap them with the appropriate adhesive, or you can use “burlap” material and wrap it on the mat and connect it well.

As for pumps, which are among the most damaging things that frost may cause, if the pump is inside a room or a box, this helps to preserve it greatly, but if it is outside a box and in the open air, it is necessary to insulate it with rock wool or burlap. Otherwise, it will lead to a breakage in the motor pump and it will not work after that, and the cost of repairing it is high.

Plant protection:

Frost affects plants negatively, and harms them greatly. When there are warnings about the presence of frost at night, avoid watering the crops on that day, so that the water does not freeze inside the plants when they are absorbed, and then lead to damage to their tissues.

You can also place sawdust around the roots to maintain the temperature in the soil. You can also wrap the branches with burlap to preserve heat (especially for young and new trees).

Auto protection:

The most common problem that cars face is the explosion of pipes and radiators in the car as a result of the expansion of water pipes when they freeze. Therefore, we always recommend applying anti -freeze , which is a liquid substance that resembles water but whose freezing point is very low.

Be careful not to turn on the wipers immediately when driving, because this leads to damage to the wipers and scratches on the glass. You can melt the freeze by turning on the interior heater or putting lukewarm water on the glass.
