Air conditioner guide

Air conditioning units, whether ducted or ductless, use a liquid called a refrigerant. A refrigerant is a liquid with a low boiling point, and it can be used to remove heat from one place to another.

An air conditioning unit works by removing air from the room and venting it over a refrigerant which will absorb heat from the air. The cool air is then returned to the room. After absorbing a certain amount of heat, the refrigerant will evaporate into a gas and then be pumped to a different section of the unit, located outside the building. The heat dissipates outside and the refrigerant cools, turning into a liquid again and allowing it to be reused.

The difference between a ducted system and a ductless system is that, in a ductless system, each room requires its own unit that will only condition the air in that room. With a ducted system, each room will have a duct leading to a single central unit that handles air conditioning for each room.

Advantages of air conditioning

When choosing an air conditioning system, there are three important factors to consider:

  • the cost
  • The noise it will make
  • Aesthetic appearance that will be noticed once installed

On cost terms , both the installation price and ongoing operating costs must be taken into account. In many buildings, the installation of adhesive system will require that they install separate units for each room. A single base unit will also provide greater energy efficiency than a number of smaller units, reducing operating costs.

A ducted system requires each room to have its own air conditioning unit, and each room must tolerate a certain amount of noise . Although air conditioning also requires a noisy unit, in practice it is a very quiet operating system as each room only needs to be connected to the unit by a single air duct. The unit itself can be placed away from occupied rooms, where it will not disturb anyone.

The duct system will also have a slight impact on the appearance on the building. This is because the ductwork is not completely visible, and the individual air conditioning unit can be stored out of sight, rather than having it in every room.

Aside from cost, noise and appearance, there are some other advantages to mention:

  • Installation : A ductless system requires a unit mounted on the outside wall of each room, which may be impractical in larger buildings. However, the duct system allows ductwork to be installed in walls or ceiling for greater flexibility and comfort.
  • Monitoring : In a ductless system, the temperature in each room is controlled by a separate unit, so changing the temperature throughout the building requires changing the settings individually for each unit. On the other hand, an air duct system allows central temperature control throughout the building. This tends to make a ducted system more feasible for larger areas than one without ducts.
