What does scraping paper mean? (sandpaper)

Sanding is indisputably one of the essential operations during a DIY project. In fact: it is a delicate work that consists in making a very smooth and clean surface before carrying out finishing work (application of paints or varnishes). So: Any DIYer worth his salt should have a stash of sandpaper. However, this type of product exists in diverse types. Learn in this article about all the criteria that should be considered when choosing sandpaper.

What does scraping paper mean?

As its name suggests, abrasive paper, commonly known as "sandpaper", is covered with a layer of fine, small slivers to polish a surface. This can be wood, steel or even glass. As far as the field of use is concerned, abrasive paper is a specific product for different operations such as: degreasing, flattening, reducing or even sharpening .

There are different types of sandpaper, including:

Natural removers

  • Quartz or flint are ideal for polishing raw wood. This type of product requires manual polishing technique due to its high abrasiveness;
  • Brown corundum which is generally associated with zinc esters. It is ideal for polishing plasterboard as well as surfaces covered with paint or varnish. This product is fully compatible with sanding machine;
  • Emery cloth is particularly resistant to stress. It is ideal for working on curved surfaces and metal. You can also use this type of sandpaper for intensive sanding;
  • Titanium is only used in disc sanders. It allows extensive sanding of wood, concrete, brick, etc.

Synthetic abrasives

like :

  • Silicon carbide, which is a black material;
  • Synthetic corundum
  • To blink.

Grain size

This is also a particularly important criterion. Grain size is classified into different categories. Each category has a number ranging from 10 to 7,000, from the coarse grain to the finest.

Coarse grit, from class 10 to 60, is ideal for rough sanding: stripping, etc. Those belonging to categories 80 to 180 are used for more precise operations. Grain grades 110 to 280 are used for finishing work. Finally, the 200 to 7000 grits are the ones that are super fine, even invisible. These are suitable for work on car bodywork, jewelry, etc.

Coordination

Abrasive papers are marketed in different forms depending on your needs:

  • Grinder discs
  • Self-constipation tablets
  • rolls;
  • Sleeves.
  • Flap wheels
  • Gangs, etc.

If you use a machine, remember to check the appropriate band references. If you have any doubts, seek advice from a specialist. Don't forget to wear the required protective equipment before using abrasive paper (gloves, mask, goggles, etc.).
