How does air conditioning work?

Air conditioning systems are found in every office, home and commercial building and provide a welcome respite from the sweltering heat. Have you ever thought a little about how these systems work? In this article, he will give you insight into the inner workings of a typical air conditioning system.

How does air conditioning work?

An air conditioning system operates in a cycle in which a special substance, the refrigerant, is repeatedly heated and cooled. Refrigerants have a low temperature of evaporation, which means they can change from a liquid to a gas relatively easily, absorbing heat to initiate this transformation and cooling the surrounding air as a result. To allow this transition to be effective and efficient, the air conditioning system consists of four main parts.

Home air conditioning process

Air conditioning system parts:

A typical air conditioning system, whether a large commercial structure or a small home installation, consists of four main parts. Among these parts, the compressor and condenser are located outside the property, the evaporator is inside, and the expansion valve is in the middle.

  • Compressor: The compressor puts the refrigerant, which at this point is in a gaseous state, under pressure. As a result of the increased pressure, the temperature of the coolant also increases.
  • Condenser: In a condenser, the refrigerant cools and allows the heat to spread outside the home or building. This causes the coolant to return to its liquid state. This cold refrigerant is pumped into your property.
  • Expansion valve: The liquid refrigerant is still under high pressure when it leaves the condenser. As it passes through the expansion valve, the fluid expands and its pressure decreases.
  • Evaporator: The low-pressure liquid easily evaporates into gas in the evaporator by absorbing heat from the room, thus cooling the air temperature. The air conditioning unit also often has a fan so that the cooled air can be better distributed throughout the room.
A cold evaporator can also remove moisture from the air. Humidity contributes to increasing the temperature of the place, making you feel warm. By cooling the overall air temperature, water vapor in the air condenses and many air conditioning units include a moisture collection pan for this reason.

Conclusion on air conditioning

In short, air conditioning cycles refrigeration through the four steps of the system: compression , condensation , expansion , and evaporation. The refrigerant evaporates and absorbs heat from inside your property, compresses it, then expels the heat outside, condensing and cooling again as a result.
