How to insulate the roof from heat and cold

When we buy our new home, there are many aspects that we appreciate. Do we want a separate house or an apartment? Do we prefer a ground floor or an upper floor? At the moment of making a decision, we have to take into account some characteristics of the house that we are going to buy that can subsequently affect our daily life, especially taking into account the climate of the place where we live.

A large number of people choose independent houses, chalets or penthouses, because they have more space and because the “noisy neighbors” factor is usually greatly reduced this way. They also have more space and, perhaps in the case of a loft, a large balcony. It may seem like all the advantages, but when winter comes, if the roof is not properly insulated, our house can become a refrigerator. If you want to find a solution before this station arrives, we will explain to you in How to Do It How to insulate the roof from heat and cold .

How to insulate the roof from cold and heat from the outside

If we want to adequately insulate the roof from the cold (or from the heat), we have to act in the right order. Therefore, we must start by studying and analyzing whether cold and moisture can enter, because the external insulation of the roof is insufficient.

The feeling of high humidity, or even scary leaks, increases the coldness inside the house, so, first of all, we will have to make sure that it is well waterproof . We advise you to check all possible joints and gaps when laying waterproofing layers so that not a single drop gets inside. Above all, be especially careful if your roof is built with tiles, because it is easy for water to find any small space to enter your house.

We also recommend that if your roof is made of tiles, you get some breathable membranes . They are thin layers that make it easier to regulate the temperature inside your home and also reduce the risk of suffering from condensation problems due to excessively high temperature inside as opposed to humidity outside.

How to insulate the house from the inside

Although it is true that you first have to pay attention to the external insulation, the most important thing is the interior, because it is the most effective in insulating the cold. Before choosing which way to proceed, you should consider two basic aspects:

  • Insulation will reduce the space : something you will notice especially in the case of an attic.
  • How to insulate it : This depends on the temperature level in the coldest months in your area.

In case it is not very cold where you live, insulation will not require much space. We recommend that you choose, for example, rolls made of very thin layers of polyethylene and aluminum (in some places called reflective rollers) which are no more than fifteen mm thick. In addition, their placement is very simple, just staple them to wood and then cover them with plasterboard.

But if winter temperatures are colder, you'll have to use stronger insulation. In this case, we advise you to resort to layers of rock wool, glass wool, or expanded polystyrene . Remember that the thickness must not be less than 90 mm. Their situation is the same as that described above.

Thermal insulation of ceilings without work

There is a large number of people who do not want to install layers or thermal panels and finally choose another solution: paint. This alternative may not convince you at first, but it works. In fact, this is considered the best insulation term in the world by many. This type of insulating coating is called anti-condensation.

It is a panel that can be used in any type of interior room. It's matte and acrylic and it works because it consists of a bunch of very small balls that form a very thin but effective barrier that keeps the heat inside the room, like a kind of thermal barrier .

In addition, it is also useful to regulate the internal temperature of the room, avoiding the appearance of condensation. Depending on the brand, you will find different colors, from the "invisible" one, to a wide range of different shades for your rooms.
