Reasons why fans get hot and how to fix them

A fan, whether it is a table fan or even a ceiling fan, has an important function in a room to produce cool air.

In fact, there are currently air conditioners that produce cooler air. But the electrical power required is also large.

If you continue to use the air conditioner, your electricity bill may balloon!

Well, even though the electricity is less than AC, it doesn't mean the fan never broke.

Overheating is one of the most common problems with fans. Usually, this is caused by a faulty fan motor.

Why can fans get hot?

Before finding a solution for an overheating fan, you must first know the cause of the problem.

This is how the fan works. Electrical energy generates magnetic energy.

This magnetic energy is converted into mechanical energy that drives the motor.

The motor is connected to a set of blades held at a certain angle to direct the wind's energy.

So we convert one form of energy into another. Energy that appears as a unit cannot be created or destroyed.

When a fan uses this simple principle, some of the energy is converted into heat energy.

Under ideal conditions, this energy is negligible. However, if the inside of the fan is not working properly, the fan will generate more hot air.

A classic example is a damaged bearing, while the bearing itself connects the blades to the fan motor.

This can make the fan blades move slower reducing the electromotive force generated by the motor.

This extra energy has to go somewhere because it cannot be destroyed. The excess energy is converted into heat, and this is what causes the fan to overheat.

This is the most common cause of fan overheating. However, there may be other reasons that need to be analyzed before performing the repair.

Other causes of fan overheating are:

1. Corrosion of the fan liners

Another cause could be wear of the bushings inside the fan.

Visually inspect with your eyes, or insert the motor shaft into the sleeve, and shake it from side to side.

If it is loose, the bearing/bushing is worn out.

If the fan heat is caused by wear of the bushings, remove the bearing/bush and replace it with a new one. Then replace the bearing/bushing with the dynamo drive.

2. Short circuit in the motor winding

If some of the motor windings on the fan are shorted, the motor will start drawing more current.

In fact, every fan motor is equipped with a thermal fuse to prevent this from happening.

If the fan is drawing too much current, it will burn out like most other fuses tend to burn out.

Another function provided is to avoid the formation of thermal energy in the fan.

How to fix fan overheating?

Well, now you know what causes the fan to overheat.

When you encounter this, you will probably call an electronics repair service to fix it.

But in the midst of this pandemic, these services may be difficult to find given that many people are staying home.

You can fix it yourself. However, if the problem is with the motor or electricity, especially if you are dealing with 230 volts, avoid repairing it yourself as it could be fatal to yourself.

1. Clean the dust

- Remove the front grille and remove the blades

- Carefully remove the screws

- Remove the engine cover

- Make sure dust accumulates on the engine. Dust can constantly drag the fan and thus overheat

- Clean the dust. Be careful not to damage the connectors and cables while they are there.

The next section will cover removing the previously disconnected motor.

It needs major maintenance and repairs. If you're not sure what to do, just clean the engine and restore everything.

2. Fuss

- Loosen the screw that secures the motor to the fan body

- Pull the motor out carefully so as not to damage the connecting wires

- The fan should have one bushing in the front and one in the back

Now how to remove the liners depends on the type of liners used in the fan.

Some can be removed using nose pliers, while some require a flat screwdriver.
